At The Bodega With Mrs. Beck!
May 9, 2008
So one time I fell down a flight of steps. Right after I’d gotten my braces off too. Dude, I was tripping. Cracked my tooth all off, bruised my legs all up and scabbed my knees too. My tights were stuck to my knees with blood. The worst! You can read all about it on PrincessMelissa.com. It’s buried in there somewhere. A friend of mine recommended that I buy Vitamin E capsules, break them open and apply them to my banged up knees so I wouldn’t scar. Because, as corny as I was, I was still sometimes invited to go down red carpets for movies that went straight to DVD like Dirty Dancing Havana Nights. Google “melissa howard havana nights,” hysterical. Let’s be honest though, banged up knees in Hollywood is a lot of look. So I took the advice.
Every night, I’d pin-prick the little capsule (that part is really fun) and ooze the stuff onto my scars. This requires daily application to see any results. Granted, this might all be BS because the scars might have faded with time but I do think it really works. My skin is prone to hyperpigmentation, big time. Anywhere that my skin experiences trauma, there will be a brown mark left behind as a reminder that I will never be B. Scott flawless. I’m just saying. But I do believe this works because I can look at my knee now years and years later, after four solid months of rigorous Vitamin E application, and I can hardly tell where the scar was.
Why didn’t my mom know about this when I had chicken pox? UGH.
I guess you could always take the capsule as part of a dietary vitamin type supplement too, but I take enough pills as it is. The make-a-nice-nest-for-baby pills – folic acid, vitamin C, this big chalky white one that hardly goes down well. The last thing I need is to swallow another pill but there are many other useful ways to use Vitamin E.
My girlfriend Denise told me her mother used to break them open and apply them to the bags under her eyes to reduce puffiness. She said that she also noticed that her mother has very few wrinkles around her eyes and she attributes that to the Vitamin E. Sister girl is walking around at 55 looking like she’s well-rested on some Snow White sh*t. I’m not about to go that deep because I have a special seaweed serum I use on my eyes (for another day – I could go on forever with the products), but you should try it for a month and report your results here!
You can also apply it directly to sunburned skin. I don’t know anything about sunburn because I like to get right and crispy and I don’t really burn, but two white folks I know that do burn mix the capsules with stuff and apply it to the skin post-burn and it helps prevent peeling. I have a different product I use to prevent peeling and dryness when I am sunning, but you can’t get it at no bodega. You gotta go online or shop Whole Foods. Maybe I’ll talk about that next week. Do you want to venture out of the bodega with me next week? If so, I got something that you really really need for sun exposure, freshening up, revitalizing mid-day and moisturizing. I am obsessed! You will be too.
But for now let’s stick to trying Vitamin E. It’s like $8 for a bottle and trust me, you will never run out of the pills. They probably have a shelf life of a million years too because I rarely have to re-up. And I break them open on my husband, my boss…because the pin-pricking is the MOST FUN. I need to get a life, I know. But still.

I had a long scar on my face from a fight back when I was in high school so my sister told me to use Vitamin E on it and surely it worked. If you look at my face today (8 years later) or even a few months after it happened you would never believed a scar was ever there… VITAMIN E REALLY DOES WONDERS…
