To Sag or Not to Sag?
April 24, 2008
Ok love muffins - so the issue whether or not the Senate would put a ban on saggy pants in Louisiana has drawn a lot of attention for the last few months. The proposed ban was rejected yesterday by the legislation as a violation of freedom of speech. [Source] “We can’t regulate everything,” griped a state senator. “Where does it stop?” Love Muffins I don’t know about you but I am very happy about this ruling. Say this had passed, I mean what next? Goth clothing? Sun glasses inside. My bonnet? Where do we draw the line with this madness? I’m quite pleased that the Senate decided to stay up out of our wardrobe closet. Thoughts?

If brothas knew the history behind(no pun intended)wearing your pants below your ass, they would stop it. Personally, I think it looks stinky AND ignorant. It should be against the law for these young boys/men to dress in this way. As my mother would say, “they look retarded!”
I hate to see guys or girls showing their underwear. I think that is so disgusting and ignorant. I do not want to see nobody’s behind.
I agree with Keith. If they knew where that idea came from they would stop. I personally don’t go for guys that sag, but i feel that it’s their decision to sag or not to sag.
I remember when they were doing the same thing here in Atlanta–right around the time the city “tagged” all the homeless people and made asking for change a crime punishable with jail time
What does a boy sagging his pants have to do with the failing economy? What does it have to do with the genocide going on in darfur? Seriously there are so many other more imortant things to worry about & yet the senate is focused on putting a ban on wardrobe style. i don’t want to see anyone’s underwear either but it’s also their choice to dress how they want to dress & if guys wanna sag their pants then more power to them; I could care less.
I personally hate when guys wear their pants like that. It looks stupid. As far as the origin of the baggy pants look, I think young people are fully aware that this originated in jails. That made to look appealing from the start; wearing pants that way would make others think you did some jail time and up goes your street cred. With all that said, I think the goverment should be concentrating on lowering gas prices, not what people are wearing. This is supposed to be “land of the free”. We can’t allow them to start taking away our right to dress the way we want to. If so, then whats next? Outlawing finger waves? (well, that wouldn’t be so bad)
not a sexy look…especially when all you really see is little boys doing this. What are they trying to portray…i’m hot n ready! please…pull your pants up! looks stupid!
they know where the idea came from and trust me they don’t care… it’s like knowing where the word nigga is derived from and still saying it it’s not the laws responsbility to tell young men to pull their pants up it’s their parent’s … I see kids younger than 7 years with their tighty whities hanging out butI also have friends that sag their pants a little but pull it up when around adults they know it’s something that’s accepted with their peers but not with their elders
it doesnt matter how you think it looks, or how trashy it is, or where it started. the fact is, is that it shouldnt be illegal to dress how you want to dress. as long as you are covered for the most part, its no ones business. what if they banned girls showing cleavage? what if they banned thongs on sundays? its not right to tell people how they should look. it starts off small like this, but it could turn into a much bigger problem if shit like this continue. the government already plays too many games with us as it is.
I totally agree. Wearing your pants off your behind is not a sexy look. I don’t want to see your behind. Young people are always demanding respect but we won’t get none if those bad apples continuously give us a bad name. It’s a total lack of respect. I get on my boyfriend about his saggy pants every day and it goes in one eye and out the other.
Ridiculous! How many women walk around with there cleavage out of tight shirt and ass out of a tiny skirt EVERYDAY and no one says anything? No Nudity or skin is hardly ever shown when people sag and its a fashion choice. Another way for hetero W.A.S.P America to push there morals on others. Of course I know plenty of black people who believe this craziness too, because of there ” RELIGION”. Make note I used the word religion and not Spirituality. America doesn’t realize there liberty’s are slowly being stolen.
I don’t think that self-expression should be outlawed. If this becomes a political issue, then they might as well outlaw every form of self-expression. People should be allowed to dress or say anything that they want if it is a direct reflection of who they are as an individual. This is America. This or any other issue related to self-expression should not be involved with government or the political game.
Quite a few people have voiced concerns regarding a violation of 1st amendment rights and freedom of self-expression on this topic. First, they are not trying to outlaw sagging altogether; they are trying to fine individuals for public indecency. If you sag and your shirt is covering you tail, who cares?! It’s when your bum is literally hanging out and is visible to the public that it becomes public indecency. I live in Texas and a law has been passed, in the area that I am in, which states sagging at this extreme level is public indecency and you will be fined. I completely agree with it because personally I don’t want my 9-year-old sister, her friends and any other children to have to be exposed to, excuse me, ass hanging out everywhere. I will agree, however, that our government has more important political issues to tackle and therefore should focus on more pressing issues.
First, I think there are bigger issues that the government needs to worry about, minus a pair of damn pants! Now,I agree with Robin 100%. You should be able to wear what you want to wear but I don’t want to see your ass! I have two sons 7 and 11 and I wish they would!
I think it’s quite tacky and in poor taste. I happily do not associate myself with anyone who feels the need to dress like this.
I’ve seen way to many butt cheeks and dirty draws as a result of this fashion statement.
@ B. “My bonnet” you are a mess
i think its nasty. are they waiting to get fucked up the ass? wtf. Everytime i see a guy dressed like that i laugh. I dont care whay anybody says, im sixteen and almost every guy i know wears there pants like that. They are all just tryna be cool. Tryna be like everybody else. it starts with just 1 person and then everyone else is doing it. Now ive followed things people have done b4 but not when it looks ridiculous. This is just plain sad. Everything is going downhill in this world. Music is becoming bland, people are commiting more crimes, people are forgeting how to dress and so on. I swear that in the next ten years people gonna be walknig around naked and everyones gonna have a weapon on them because there are gonna be so many criminals. We are DOOOOMED. yeah right i would never wear my pants like that its called “UNDERRRRR”wear for under ur clothesss!!!!!. nobody wants to see someones underwear. its so funny how all the girls be like eww why is he wearing his pants like that? but those are the kind of guys that all the girls like, the stupid ones.
oh and about the law thing. No, i dont think it should be a law, if they wanna look like idiots, i say let them!
I believe that it shouldn’t be a law, and not everyone knows where it came from some are just following their friends,
I mean if they want to wear them like that then so what! I have no problem with it, I mean people act like they gonna go to
a job interview with thier slacks around thier butts. Com’on now! And can’t no body judge people for what they wear, I hate when
black people do that to each other yo gonna tell who a person is my what you see, and am not talking about first impressions!
At the end of the day while you judging somebody, somebody in higher power is judging you.
I feel like this, if you dont take care of a person then you having nothing to say about them at all. Espically when you don’t know them!
That’s like tellining a person that they can’t wear a biniki outside because it’s not summer yet, its spring.
Or telling them they can’t wear a sweater yet cause it not winter it’s spring. Everybody wants to rule the world or some part of it.
The next thing you know B.Scott can’t go down to Pinkberry’s no more at late nite. lol
If they are considering a ban on sagging jeans, they should also consider a ban on women who wear low-rider jean with their thong diplayed. Often, it’s half up their backs. Ugh..
I’m actually surprised by a lot of the responses on this. I don’t think b. scott was referring to whether or not you like the style but the fact that the gov’t is trying to ban a choice of style. I think Will pretty much put it into perspective. It starts with something small then eventually the bans will be for even greater things. Saggy pants is a fashion style for this era, just like belly bottoms from the 70’s, or poodle skirts in the 50’s. Regardless it is not the choice of the gov’t to decide how one should dress. And for all the people who said they don’t want thier little kids seeing butts in the street. 1st stop exaggerating. Second children hear and see far worse at home, school, on the internet… and so forth. And I have yet to meet a child traumatized from seeing a guy in saggy jeans (I intern at an primary school in the guidance dept). If you raise your child right then you have nothing to fear. Instead fear the gov’t making the land of the free the land of control. And for the record since most of yall were commenting on the style of saggy jeans. I don’t like it, but to each thier own, this is America after all.
