EAT It Up

Los Angeles’ NoHo Arts district has been on the up and up over the past couple of years—new high rise condos and apartments, cleaner surroundings and cute eateries for neighborhood patrons. When it comes to local restaurants, North Hollywood is not known for housing the top spots that feed the rich and famous, but that’s not why people go to the Valley anyways. The Valley is known for its slower pace and down to earth tone. And that’s why people are flocking to EAT. To read more click

EAT finds itself nestled in between boutiques, thrift shops and theatres on one block of Magnolia Boulevard. It would be hard to point out if there the big red E-A-T letters weren’t seated on an awning covering a few outdoor tables. Walk past those seats, and you’ll step inside a tiny space with no more than an additional eight or nine tables inside. If casual or on the go is on the agenda, take a seat at the counter than runs the length of the open-air kitchen. Look around the room, and you’ll notice an entire space furnished with tables and stools straight from Ikea and decorated with portraits from Target and Marshalls. Simplicity is key. The staff is helpful and equally down to earth. It feels like an establishment run by friends who are there to serve friends.

Because EAT is only open for breakfast and lunch, it’s wise to get there early on the weekends. Food is not served past 3:00 pm, so late risers may have to find another alternative. And keep dining groups small because large parties will find it difficult to get a spot. It’s not difficult to find something that will satisfy your cravings. With three menu listings—breakfast, lunch and specials—there are a good number of basic choices to placate even the pickiest eater.

Forget fusion menus, fancy spices and creative combos—the food at EAT is simple, but in a good way. Breakfast includes egg plates with bacon or sausage, a variety of meaty or veggie omelettes and of course the sweet stuff like pancakes and french toast. Of course, for those who want go with heavier classics, there’s the EAT version of huevos rancheros with corn tortillas, eggs benedict, breakfast sandwiches on sourdough and plate-filling scrambles. If you want to keep it healthy, go for their fresh fruit bowls, raisin brown sugar oatmeal, honey almond granola or protein heavy egg white scrambles with grilled chicken. With any breakfast plate, make sure you request Ned’s shreds. Gone are the days when you need to have hash browns on the side. It’s all about their unique shredded zucchini patties cooked on the griddled and served with a side of sour cream. Don’t knock it ’til you try it.

When only two meal types are offered a day, it should be required to excel at both. Unfortunately, there’s nothing too fabulous about EAT’s midday selections. Lunch is the typical mixture of burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, hot melts, cold cut speciality sandwiches and a variety of tossed salads. Even though the selections are average, the prices are nothing to shake a finger at. Where else can you get a burger with fries for $6.50? And the servings aren’t small either. You’ll be full on less than $10 for sure.

EAT is a nice addition to the NoHo neighborhood. It’s not a fancy spot with a maitre’d, and there’s no valet. Forget overpriced food, and don’t think you’ll leave hungry. All platters are made fresh to order and arrive quickly due to their desire to keep the service numbers small and customers happy. It’s everything that a local joint should be, and sometimes that’s all you want.

Ooh, sounds good. I’ll probably stop by this week since I’m always around the area.

LOL - why is this filed in nightlife when it’s only open for breakfast and lunch? (Don’t mind me - I’m just anal.)

    =)

    peace,
    Gian
