Music Review: Pocketful Of Sunshine

When Natasha Bedingfield released her debut album Unwritten back in 2005, she introduced the world to her infectious blend of Pop and R&B and spawned two hit singles in the process (I can’t remember how many times I heard “Unwritten”). Now the lovable UK singer/songwriter is back with Pocketful of Sunshine and judging from the success of its lead single, “Love Like This”, this one is bound to be a hit as well.

Pocketful of Sunshine is not a drastic departure from Natasha’s previous works, but it does showcase more of her distinctive raspy voice and finds her experimenting with an array of different sounds. This album ranges from inspirational and introspective (Happy” and “Freckles”) to hopelessly romantic (“Say It Again” and “Put Your Arms Around Me”). Bedingfield is at her best when she experiments with melody and sounds as displayed on the charming and ethereal Colplay-esque “Backyard” or the fusion of pop and reggae of “Love Like This”. The trouble comes on the Darkchild produced “Angel” which comes off flat, contrived, and uninspired.

Overall Pocketful of Sunshine is a listening pleasure, though at times her sound can be a bit too fluffy and verges on being preachy. While Bedingfield seems to mastered the creation of a pop hit, she has yet to use her unique voice to its potential or blend musical genres in a way that doesn’t come off forced. There’s nothing wrong with a little sunshine…and a pocketful will do just fine.
