LBS Exclusive: Chris Brown NYC Concert Love Muffin Review!

One of my favorite love muffins, DL, just sent me this detailed review of the Chris Brown Concert that took place last night in New York, NY at Madison Square Garden!

Last night marked the finale of Chris Brown’s Madison Square Garden performances. The bill called for Chris Brown and Bow Wow, but there were lots of surprises. Shop Boyz, Lil Mama, and Soulja Boy with Hurricane Chris opened the show. Out of all of the openers, I truly have to say that Lil Mama (who recently lost her own Mama) was the best of the opening acts. Her entourage, although huge, each had a purpose for being there. I’ve never seen so many set and clothing changes for an opening act — that DID NOT interrupt the flow of her set at all.

But on to what you really want to know about… The concert was DJ’d b Funkmaster Flex, who of course was his usual cutting the record off too soon self… Bow Wow takes the stage and is the biggest ball of energy. He definitely works the stage like someone with something to prove not only to himself, but to critics as well. He addressed “the internet bloggers” by saying that “there is no beef between me and that man backstage. That is my brother, and ya’ll need to stop hating.” Tiny T.I. has definitely taken some advanced swagger courses from somewhere….

Noticeably absent from Bow’s set was his other half, Omarion… Then, while Bow was on a break, who showed up to do his own set? That’s right, O. Let me first say that I enjoy Omarion, but he put on the laziest set yesterday. I don’t know if his skinny leg jeans were too tight, or if he just didn’t really feel like dancing… He performed some snippets of his own hits, did a few dance moves, and then re-joined Bow so they could Face-Off.

Time for the main event - Chris Brown. The set starts with what seems like an unending animated adventure where CB has to save his girl from ‘the haters’ (who happen to be ninja’s and some dragon looking character). Of course he escapes danger, and descends to the stage from the sky… Let me just say that his “package” ? I don’t think that’s bunching… maybe that’s what Karrine saw.

I digress.

Chris ran through his usual suspects and some new songs. He doesn’t sing to much, and rather dances for most of the set. He had a unique way to incorporate the guest stars on his collaborations within his set- they were projected onto a screen that descended to the stage that he interacted with. He even danced battled himself with this screen effect. Lots of unexpected guests during the downtime of the set though… Puffy showed up and of course ran us through the “All About the Benjamins” and “Last Night,” then just when you thought the surprises were over 50 Cent showed up and told us he “Get Money” — the crowd is bananas at this point.

Chris ends it with “Run It” and then with “Kiss Kiss” in which the dancers and himself shut it down. All in all - he’s no Justin, but he puts on a good show. This kid is going places.

My own personal sidebar… Sexy needs to be brought back down to a respectable level. All of these guys ripped off shirts and tank tops and grinded endlessly on the floor… even Soulja Boy. What is really going on? Your fans are 10-14 years old — are you really making sexual innuendo? Oh hell, why am I being a prude? Soulja probably would say ’superman dat hoe’ at this point….

I felt the same way! I took my 12 year old sister and I saw those pissy ass boys grinding and shit I’m like come on! This was last weekend at the AAC in Dallas where the rumor started lol. Anyway it was good show. I just didn’t like the mature dancing. Oh and the “unending animated adventure” was over the top and long lol.

I went last night and I was sitting in a section full of grown ass white women who sat down the whole entire time and when we left they said they truly enjoyed it……. I think he did a good job of entertaining the kiddies while keeping a 19 year old like me satisfied the animation was long lol but it was creative… I wanted to shoot the DJ he cut off songs he played the hotter songs really low and the so-so songs real loud with mad base he was just all over the place I’ve never been to a Justin concert so I wouldn’t be able to compare the two but the show was definitely worth the 105 bucks I paid

hey guys - i should have clarified that “he’s no justin” comment
I just mean that he needs to work toward controlling his singing while dancing. Justin & Usher both have significant breath control… however, this comes with time. I’m sure Chris will get there.

I haven’t been to an actual CB concert, but I’ve seen snippets on YouTube, and I have to agree with the gyrating! I understand Chris is an adult, but a good portion of his fans are very young girls, and he has to think about that when he performs. My 7 year old daughter LOVES him, and when we found footage of him singing Take You Down on YouTube, I had to rush to turn it off with all the humping he was doing to the air and to the stage! Or maybe I’m just an old prude too. LOL!

Chris shits on Justin in the dancing department. No comparison. As for mastering singing and dancing at the same time, he’s young and still ‘in training’. There are many more years for young Chris to master that craft.

I also wanted to add that Justin is NO WHERE near as acrobatic as Chris is on stage so I could understand how breathing control could be rather problematic but his idol MJ managed it. After years of experience it can be done.

i went to the first show at MSG and Chris lipped-sang the whole show and no one knew his words to his song mama didn’t do the show she was at her mom’s funeral Soulja Boy was the best opener that night. Bow Wow brought out fabolous and swizz beats,Omarion’s show was great he had on those damn red pants his dancing was right on piont great energy. My friends hated Chris’s show We feel Bow Wow had the best part in the show!!!

I agree with Mark and Toya. I mean even at the VMA’s Justin commented on Chris being a great performer…

There is no comparison between Justin and Chris. Justin is pop’s version of rhtytm and blues, combined with trained choreography. He’s learned well. I give him that credit. But Chris Brown embodies everything soulful, rhythmic and does it naturally. Grew up on it. Again, even Justin gave him credit for that after the VMA performance. And Chris dances way to hard to sing at the same time. I see nothing wrong with that. Why give the people a botched up version of your song, if you dance as magically as Chris and sound as good as he does vocally. As for the grinding, that’s always been there in R & B, I don’t know an answer to it. I wouldn’t take any child of mine under age 13 to a concernt unless it was Sesame Steet.
