Okay… I just thought it was a good time to educate some people including my love muffin, Jinx, that “Black” people can have blue eyes! Vanessa Williams’ parents were both of African American and European heritage and so it would not defy logic to believe that she does or could have blue (grayish) eyes! I’m interracial and have relatives with blue, green, gray, hazel and everything in between eyes. I have never met Vanessa Williams so I don’t know for sure but I can go by what I have seen of her eyes in pictures over the years.

Click HERE to see three different close-ups of Vanessa Williams’ eyes, none of which appear to be green. I think her eyes are most likely a combination of colors 80% blue and maybe 20% grayish-green; some call it “aqua” or “Caribbean-blue“. As you can see above Vanessa’s eye color appears to change color depending on the eye make-up (style and color) she has on, her clothes (color), on the light (colored, direct, non-direct), and a few more factors.

Here’s some pictures of little blue eyed Laren Galloway. Laren’s parents are both African American and he clearly has blue eyes.

Educate them B. I also come from a mixed race background and it is not unusual for black people to have blue, grey or green eyes. We are beautiful and diverse people and our eyes just like our skin come in many shades from very dark to extremely light or somewhere in between.

    That baby is so cute.

Ignorant folk alone think that black people can’t have blues eyes. Vanessa William’s eyes are green.I once met her in NYC and have a photo with her.

thank u, i’ve been tellin ppl dis for yrs…. we can have blue eyes, just like there are ppl out there that have blue skin (its a condition that i 4got the name of)….

  10. elise on October 15, 2007 at 9:24 pm #

I thought both of Ms. Williams’ parents were just light skinned black folk. I’m a huge Vanessa Williams fan and have never read or heard of her saying she or her parents are mix. Just because your light skinned does not mean you are mix.

Yes Black people can have blue eyes; but her eyes are green. At least they were when she crowned Ms. America.

I am so happy you cleared things up. :)

  12. M on October 15, 2007 at 11:14 pm #

Some Older African-American have develop a combination of both. Their eyes are brown with a blue circle around the brown. The Blue Circle begins to take over the brown more and more over the years.

  15. twan71 on October 16, 2007 at 11:26 am #

I once saw a man with blue eyes like that baby but he was JET BLACK!! Scared the S*** out of me!!! It was really weird to see. My family on my father side has blue/green and light hazel eyes, my father has light hazel eyes and they are not mixed.

  16. Paula on October 16, 2007 at 11:59 am #

I guess we made it now! LOL So what? My aunts/uncles have two Black (American) parents and they have all different colored eyes. Of course we all have European heritage, or else we would be straight African! So what?!?! What does that mean? Nothing at all. How about we make a “Black people can have straight hair too”…how about it? So?

  17. Paula on October 16, 2007 at 12:04 pm #

Vanessa Williams are also born to Black American parents. ALL Black Americans have European ancestry (again). And that baby looks scary. I’m sorry, just because your eyes are blue, doesnt mean it looks good!

  18. Paula on October 16, 2007 at 12:05 pm #

    *ahem* correction: is

  20. Triz on January 10, 2008 at 12:22 am #

Mrs.Williams obviously has blue eyes;not green. Compare Tyra’s eyes and Vanessa’s eyes, they are very very different. Anyway,I’m glad that you know her eye color is real,as for there are people who think she is wearing contacts. It’s funny because Paris Hilton wears contacts [natural color is brown] and nobody questions her!

This site lists her eyes as blue :http://www.whosdatedwho.com/celebrities/people/dating/vanessa-l-williams.htm!

  21. Lucy Carmichael on January 15, 2008 at 11:08 am #

Laren is a beautiful baby. It is obvious most African Americans have European ancestory and blue eyes can skip many generations and show up. I think diveristy is great he’s a darling, happy, handsome little boy.

  22. Ainusa on January 20, 2008 at 10:07 am #

It’s rare, but it obviously happens. Blue eyes are recessive. Green is the rarest. Nobody questions Paris Hilton because blue eyes are common among White Europeans. And one doesn’t need to be mixed with European to have light eyes. There are 100% Africans who do posses hazel, although super rare, blue eyes.

Ok you people are not educated. The girl who said just because lighted skinned doesnt mean your mixed? ah yeah it does, somewhere down the line the was some in your family maybe on both siad that wasnt black. and to the girl from kenya I thought you would know many people in africa have none african people somewhere in there family which results in light, to mid skin and light to mid eye color.

  24. Essence on February 21, 2008 at 8:37 pm #

    a great conversation piece

  25. harpersdivine on March 13, 2008 at 4:53 pm #

Actually, light eyes are not a sub-saharan african trait. It’s mostly european influence. Just b/c ur parents may identify as “black” there most likely intermixing in the past(trust me A LOT). due to this country’s history of treating race, we come to think that we are “pure” and no intermingling goes on…it’s just a fact, accept it….Having blue, green, purple etc eyes will not make you “less” black.

  26. Loadfaster on May 21, 2008 at 11:49 am #

Im a lighskinned brotha, most people think one of my parents is white. No my family for some reason married into light skinned blacks. Im the fairest in our family tree.

Thats not a boast in any way!

anyhow Ill admit, it seems very strange to see such a blue eyed lack child. That is a very qute child. But at the same time those eyes! It looks so foreign to me almost alien!

of course its bound to happen.

  27. Brother from Alabama on May 27, 2008 at 7:33 pm #

Black people can have blue eyes. I have an aunt, an uncle and a first cousin with natural blue eyes.

Having different color eyes other than the normal brown is very common on my father’s side of the family. My father has hazel eyes and he has 6 other siblings, 4 out of the 6 plus my father have different color eyes. Two of them, my father’s sister and brother (my aunt and uncle) have natural striking blue eyes and dark skin just like the pictures of baby Laren. My father’s other two sisters (my aunts) have steel grey eyes and light brownish yellow respectively.

My father’s family orgin is from Trinidad/Tobago.

I think it is a recessive gene because I have brown eyes, being that my mother, who is black as well, has brown eyes.

  28. Taliska on July 31, 2008 at 1:08 pm #

I have blue eyes and both my parents are black (although my great grandmother is mixed black n white) and my other grandmother is mixed with black and indian.
Yes a black person can have blue eyes but only if one of their ancestors were white european.
The same goes for green eyes. When people have different ethnicities the sky is the limit with eye colour.

  29. Halima on September 17, 2008 at 4:21 am #

That baby’s eyes is SCARY!! i hope its photoshop to make it so bright- if i see that at nighttime i might think i was in a chucky remake movie. lol. but i hope when he grows up it’ll look cute.

  30. Sista from florida on October 10, 2008 at 3:10 am #

I just think some people are ignorant to say that the baby is scary. That baby is just what God wanted him to be. In case you didn’t know….black people can make any color skin, hair, and eyes. There is no limit. Just because you never saw a black baby with blue eyes doesn’t mean it’s scary or ugly. It just means you need to read more and maybe even travel the world. You’ll be amazed what you’ll find.

  31. dasha on November 2, 2008 at 7:58 am #

YES US BLACK FOLKS CAN HAVE BLUE EYES, MY COUSIN’S MOM GRANDMA IS WHITE, AND HIS DAD IS BLACK/INDIAN AND HE’S LIGHT,THOUGH HIS EYES ARE SOMEWHAT A HAZEL,HIS GIRLFRIND IS BLACK/WHITE AND SHE HAS PRETTY BLUE GREEN EYES,I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THEIR BABY GIRL DUE NEXT MONTH…

  32. Nicole on November 2, 2008 at 5:24 pm #

Blue eyes is a recessive trait. In order for a child to manifest with blue eyes (the phenotype) he/she must have received a blue eye gene one from each parent. So both of his parents are blue eye gene carriers. Racial purity is rare anywhere on the earth. All people are racially mixed it is just a matter of how much of a percentage of what you are mixed with. And yes, even in Africa the people are mixed.

  33. str on November 13, 2008 at 5:01 am #

they can only have them if they’re mixed. that means they aren’t black they’re mulatto. real black people can’t have green or blue eyes

  34. sillytwin08 on November 19, 2008 at 3:04 pm #

Well we don’t say that white people can’t have brown eyes, we never say “oh your too white to have brown eyes, so your not a “real” white person” lol. So if white people who are the lightest of all races can have brown eyes why isn’t it possible for black or non-white people to have lighter shades of eye color without being mixed? If that’s the case then everyone is mixed. And that’s a bunch of bull and it doesn’t make you any less black or of non-european ethnicity. Eye color is complicated anyway because there’s more than 1 gene that determines eye color. And at times it just shows up at random, it happens. Its simply just what god wanted and shows you that his creations aren’t just limited to certain factors like racial mixing. It could be a mutation without any interaction from another people. Thousands of years ago there were probably “real” black people who had blue eyes or other hues besides brown. It was just a rare occurence and I’m not refering to albinism either.

  35. Comments on November 30, 2008 at 8:57 am #

My grandmother had green eyes and all of her children had either bright green eyes or yellow-tinted eyes except my father. My eyes are between dark brown and hazel. Back in my family tree on both sides, my great great grandfathers were white. If you see an african-american with green, blue, or hazel eyes, they definitely have a white ancestor. It might be generations back, but it is there. Our ancestors did not get off the boat with light skin, european features, and light-colored eyes.
